Bad News for Canucks (Fans)…Luongo Suffers Setback

Dec 15, 2008

In an interview yesterday, Vancouver Canucks goaltender Robert Luongo admitted that he pushed his recovery from a groin injury too aggressively and has suffered a setback.

This was the first time that the Vancouver captain has spoken with the media since leaving practice early on Wednesday, and he said that there was no timetable for his return to even begin practicing again, let alone playing a game.

“This is the first time I’ve dealt with a groin injury and just when I thought I was ready to get back into it, my groin was telling me something else,” Luongo said. He also added that he was going to take it a little bit slower and ensure that he is fully ready to get back onto the ice.

The Club has officially said Luongo’s return is being measured on a week to week basis. There was a report that alleged Luongo could be lost for the season, but Vancouver officials dismissed those rumours.

Interesting to note though was late in the week in Edmonton, in preparation for the Saturday night game against the Oilers, Canucks forward Alex Burrows accidentally leaked that they would be without their captain for 4 to 6 weeks. However, general manager Mike Gillis was quick to step in and clarify that Burrows was simply stating the timeline of a standard groin injury.

Luongo has not played since suffering the injury on November 22 in Pittsburgh. The Canucks are 5-5-1 without their star goaltender.
