Self-proclaimed NHL bad-boy Sean Avery has done it again.
He has said and done a lot of idiotic things over the years, and his comments made in Calgary prior to the Dallas Stars’ game versus the Flames were no exception. The league stepped in and issued an immediate indefinite suspension order for the super pest, after he referred to his ex-girlfriends as sloppy seconds.
All I have to say is, Are you kidding me???
Avery was just being Avery, a pest. He deliberately waited for all of the television crews to be present for him to make his comments. It was all for the purpose of getting under the skin of Calgary Star defenseman Dion Phaneuf who is currently dating one of Avery’s ex’s, Elisha Cuthbert.
Did it work? Probably, but we will never really know because Avery didn’t get to suit up and face the music. The NHL cited the reason for Avery’s suspension as “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game”.
What the NHL really did was suspend Avery because of a fight that “could” have happened between him and Phaneuf. COULD have? I think that is ridiculous. Many times players have come out and vowed revenge for a hit that happened in another game, and I have never seen anyone get suspended over that (Brad May come to mind after the Steve Moore hit on Markus Naslund??). I don’t see how Avery’s comments are much worse…
Of course I have never played a game in the NHL, but from what players have said, what goes on and is said on the ice is a lot worse and a lot dirtier than Avery’s comments. I agree that his comments were foolish and uncalled for, but he didn’t use profanities and it was airable on television.
The league continues to let hits from behind or slue foots go un-noticed, and now they are suspending players for taunting?
Of note, however, the league’s decision was clearly supported and not refuted by the Dallas Stars organization. It seems as though Avery may have suited up for the last time as a Star.
