Calgary’s off season pickups paid dividends last night in their 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Forward Mike Cammalleri, who was picked up in a trade with the LA Kings, scored three goals and Curtis Glencross, who was plucked away as a free agent from northern rivals Edmonton, netted the winner Thursday evening at GM Place.
Henrik Sedin Battles Robin RegehrWith 13:29 to go in the third period, Glencross stole the puck off Canuck defenseman Alex Edler, and broke in alone on Curtis Sanford, filling in again for injured captain Roberto Luongo. Glencross beat Sanford with a backhander for the eventual winner.
I wonder if the Oilers, who are near the bottom in the league in goals for, wish they had paid more attention and effort to try and sign Glencross, who recorded his sixth point in his last seven games. With 13 points this season, the native of Kindersley Saskatchewan would be third on the Oilers in scoring. The Oilers seemingly felt that Glencross’ role was redundant, with the acquisition of Erik Cole. Cole, who was acquired in the offseason from Carolina, makes around 3 million more than Glencross. Cole has only 7 points so far and letting go of Glencross looks like a mistake on the part of the Oilers.
The Canucks led the game most of the way, and did not trail until Cammalleri’s hat trick goal just over a minute into the third. Mayson Raymond tied the game for Vancouver on a sweet setup from Kyle Wellwood.
The teams will square off once again, in the back half of the home and home, in Calgary. Saturday’s road game will be the first of seven straight for the Canucks.
Despite the loss, it was a milestone night for Henrik Sedin, who registered his 400th career point in the NHL.
